Introduction
I know that many people believe that once we become adults, games
are irrelevant - apart from those that revolve around politics, careers
or the 'serious' games like poker where large stakes of money are
involved. Certainly a large proportion of the adult population throw scorn on
those adults who actually enjoy, and spend a lot of time, playing games
on computers.
This is a nonsense. Games are not only fun but they can also be extremely useful at honing skills such as planning, strategy and tactics that can then be transferred or used in those big 'adult' games. In effect, in life itself. Chess has always been regarded as a skilled game suitable for both adults and children. Most cultures have some games that are acceptable for adults - why then should many computer games be so belittled? I assume that people who do not play them see them as the sort of thing played by nerds. Role-playing games have also often been derided - yet how many times do you see enactments of battles, jousts or medieval activities by adults at various fetes or carnivals - often in the guise of being educational? I see little difference between such role playing activities. Admitted one is based in reality, the other often within fantasy or sci-fi. Yet the people performing are not that much different. All are acting. And enjoying themselves. And often learning - recently such games have hit the training rooms of numerous companies as directors and executives role-play their way to success (or otherwise). Thus I make no apology for my love of games. And will continue to play for as long as I am able! Games that I enjoy playing:
Marlin Games My own company, Marlin Games, came to an end in 1990. However, it was successful as these things go, and I had good reviews in many magazines, including CRASH!, Sinclair User, Your Sinclair, ST Format and GM. For some reviews of my games see Company Softography and a review of The Beast of Torrack Moor in Your Sinclair - not bad, eh? For information on how some of my games were marketed, see Zenobi (I wrote them under my married name, Linda Wright). Games that I've written and sold: |
